Hopes and Dreams

Description:

In this program, you will meet young people who fled their home countries and became refugees. By sharing their personal experiences and perceptions, it is hoped that you will begin to appreciate what it's like for a young refugee to come to a new country, learn to speak a new language and meet new people in what is often a culture quite different from their own. You'll get a sense of some of the barriers they face including starting school not knowing any English, making friends, and finding a job and you'll begin to see that one of the biggest barriers they face is discrimination and prejudice.

Agua Subterránea: Fuente de Vida en Bolivia

Description:

Groundwater is truly the source of life in Bolivia and the vast majority of the country's water supply comes from groundwater. It's used for drinking, sanitation, irrigation and industry. Despite the great importance of groundwater in Bolivia, little attention is paid to it, scarce information exists and it can be over-exploited or contaminated. This program helps raise awareness at all levels of Bolivian society to the importance of this vital resource, from the politicians to the business community, the households and most importantly the school children who represent the future of this beautiful country.

Longhouse

Description:

Longhouse Waap Galts’ap: A House for the Community tells the positive story of how a new longhouse has helped revitalize education for First Nations students at Northwest Community College, located in Terrace, British Columbia. Employing a rich tapestry of on-site footage taken from the longhouse opening, and featuring interviews with the architect, college president, and many of the First Nations artists who were involved in the project, the video demonstrates that the longhouse is a centre for teaching—not only First Nations cultures, but western cultures as well. The building was designed by Dr. Nancy Mackin, a Nisga’a-adopted architect who has designed several longhouses, both in Canada and in Norway.

First Response - Helping the Victims of SIDS

Description:

As a first responder, one of the toughest calls you will ever make involves the death of a child. But every year in North America, thousands of babies die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. First responders need to remember that a SIDS death has more than one victim. Much of your time and energy should be focused on ensuring that parents and family members receive the information and support they need. This video is designed to help first responders: Police, EMS, and Firefighters to function as effectively as possible when dealing with the death of an infant and to offer assistance to those who need it most… the family in which a SIDS death has just occurred.
