Faculty Teaching Certificate

Enhance your teaching effectiveness in this six day in-depth program. Add to your skills and build on your existing knowledge to improve the teaching and learning experience for you and your students. The program integrates instructional theory and practice as you hone your teaching strategies through a combination of lectures, discussions and applications. The University of Calgary is one of only a few Canadian universities to offer an in-depth teaching program to its faculty. Funded by the University of Calgary's Students' Union, the Teaching & Learning Centre has offered the FTC program since the fall of 2004.

PROGRAM DETAILS

The FTC program includes:

• Lectures on a variety of current teaching and learning topics
• A choice of a relevant follow-up assignment, for example, developing a course syllabus, preparing an assessment, or creating a teaching portfolio
• In-depth discussions with colleagues from a variety of faculties and departments
• Opportunities to explore teaching approaches, including inquiry and blended learning
• Extensive feedback from program facilitators and fellow FTC participants
• Individual consultations with facilitators
• Classroom observations

Teaching and learning topics include:

• Planning an effective class
• Presenting course material to both large and small groups
• Constructing valid assessments
• Building successful learning environments
• Integrating current technology into educational delivery
• Examine various teaching methods including inquiry-based and blended learning models
